Discovering Key West, Florida
Key West had been on my bucket list for years. We had planned to fly into Miami and drive to Key West in September of 2017, but Hurricane Irma caused us to make a last-minute vacation change to Oahu. This time, we planned Key West as a last-minute trip less than ten days before we left. We followed the same plan, flying into Miami. We spent the first day in Miami and arose early to make the drive to Key West.
Key West isn't just another beach destination; it's a place steeped in history and brimming with character. It is full of vibrant culture, breathtaking sunsets, and laid-back island vibes.
Depending on your interests, there are many different sights and experiences in Key West. Starting with Duval Street, the vibrant heartbeat of Key West, pulsing with energy day and night. Stretching from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean, this iconic thoroughfare is lined with colorful buildings, eclectic shops, lively bars, and mouthwatering eateries. Step into the world of literary legend Ernest Hemingway at his former residence, known as the Hemingway House. Nestled in the heart of Old Town Key West, this charming Spanish colonial-style mansion served as Hemingway's home from 1931 to 1939.
The Little White House, originally built as naval officer quarters during World War II, this structure served as President Harry S. Truman's preferred vacation retreat and the site of important decision-making during his presidency. One event on everyone’s list is the legendary Mallory Square Sunset Celebration. Join the crowds as street performers dazzle with their talents and the sun dips below the horizon in a blaze of orange and pink hues.
A lesser-known stop is the literary oasis of Books & Books @the Studio, a beloved indie bookstore nestled in the heart of Key West's historic Bahama Village. It is owned and sometimes visited by the beloved author Judy Blume. Another place to escape the crowds and unwind is Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park, where you can soak up the sun on pristine beaches and explore Civil War-era fortifications. And finally, embark on a picturesque stroll along Harbor Walk, where the charm of Key West's maritime heritage comes to life. As you wander along the waterfront, you'll be treated to breathtaking views of sailboats bobbing in the water, historic seaport attractions, and bustling marina. And, of course, no trip to Key West is complete without indulging in a slice of tangy Key lime pie from Kermit's Key West Key Lime Shoppe.
Although we chose to explore on foot, getting around the island is a breeze with options like bicycle rentals, scooters, golf carts, and convenient trolley services.
